NA IMPRECISA VISÃO DO VENTO is a work by Susana Paiva (image) and Diogo Martins (text), developed as part of the multidisciplinary project Rastro, Margem, Clarão, in which a collective of performing artists, visual artists and essayists set out to think through the writing of Rui Nunes (b. 1947) in all its heterogeneity, its thematic knots and its disquiet, taking a bold and heuristically transdisciplinary approach.

Susana is not spurred on by images that give her back a mimicry of reality: if what she sees with the naked eye is imprinted on the film, she sets about disfiguring the visible, benighting the day, in search of other layers that might disorient both her and the image. […] The desire not to show what is seen through the image, but to offer whoever looks the invitation to imagine, to forge other secret bonds between things (the divine virtue of the imagination, as Baudelaire put it) – this is where Susana Paiva’s images speak to the becoming-revolutionary of what Jonathan Crary calls the ‘temporary absence of the sleeper’, that leap of faith over the abyss of not knowing tomorrow: ‘an interval into which glimpses of an unlived life, of a postponed life, can edge faintly into awareness’. Signs of a world that carries on without our being alert to it. Brief signs of a freedom announcing itself, of auspicious first desires, of a politics of the possible and the open-ended, which is imagination as politics, as poetics, as a form of life. The unforeseeable in the substance of the visible.

[…] These images exhibit the fork at which language must choose between saying the world fallibly and saying fallibility itself, the telling that is failing – the blindness of language, Derrida says – the world that never quite becomes a world, because there are as yet no words to name it, to delimit it, to unimagine it.
